Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills advised BHP Billiton Limited on the demerger of certain of its assets to create a simplified BHP Billiton and a new independent global metals and mining company, South32.
The Greenwoods team, led by Cameron Rider and Richard Hendriks with significant support from Cameron Blackwood and Narelle McBride, assisted BHPB in obtaining the necessary rulings to address the Australian tax outcomes of the transaction for BHPB as well as its shareholders.
South32 will be a globally diverse metals and mining company with operations in a dozen countries, producing alumina, aluminium, coal, manganese, nickel, silver, lead and zinc. The new company’s head office will be in Perth.
